Workshop: Job Growth and Economic Development in South Australia

Learn how companies can succeed financially in the long term, through products that deliver environmental benefits, social benefits, and cost savings.

On 26 October 2016, 100 leaders from academia, business and the not-for-profit sector gathered at the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand to discuss sustainable development and job creation. The five-minute video summary of the workshop captures key highlights.

Led by the South Australian Treasurer and UniSA School of Management, the group will now explore the development of a Leadership Council in affiliation with the global Network for Business Sustainability, led by Professor Tima Bansal at the Ivey Business School.

Gain exclusive access to leading global research institutes

The Leadership Council is an exclusive group of non-competing organisations. Leadership Council members contribute an annual fee of $12,500, over a 3-year period, to support the Network. Joining the Leadership Council will provide companies with exclusive access to leading global research institutes and the opportunity to shape and scope two sustainable innovation research projects that have direct benefit to Leadership Council members.

Crowdfund your own research project

UniSA is also offering workshop participants the opportunity to submit a research proposal to the UniSA crowdfunding platform. Successful proposals may be eligible for financial support from UniSA in the form of $1 for every $5 raised, as well as a $3,500 in research support through the relevant UniSA project team.

Based on pre- and post surveys, two important gaps could inspire research proposals: global and intergalactic thinking.

Global thinking

The Treasurer of South Australia urged workshop participants to think big. “Asia and the Pacific is an evolving region facing megatrends, such as urbanization, economic and trade integration, rising incomes, and changing consumption patterns” he said. Adding, “You tell us how the South Australian Government can step in or get out of the way,” to help you take advantage of these opportunities.

Research proposal are invited to think big and move from Australia (with a population of 24 million) to Asia and the Pacific (with a population of 4 billion) to scale up our positive impact on a more sustainable future. UniSA is pleased to offer a range of supporting resources such as information fact sheets on Trading in Asia to help inform research proposals.

Intergalactic thinking: Where is your moonshot?

More than 50 years ago, U.S. President John F. Kennedy captured the world’s imagination when he said, “This nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” And thus, the term moonshot entered the lexicon as shorthand for a difficult or expensive task, the outcome of which is expected to have great significance.

Workshop participants identified the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a potential moonshot and we welcome research proposal on innovative solutions to achieve these complex challenges.
