A tool from the Smart City Innovation Lab enables teaching, research and action on sustainable business models.
This session was part of the NBS Sustainability Centres Community (SCC) Workshop 2021. The SCC connects business school sustainability centres worldwide.

The Venturely.io platform that aims to help businesses capitalize on business model innovation in the context of digital transformation, sustainability and internationalisation. “We want to help innovators avoid cognitive biases, provide guidance, and support thinking outside the box,” said platform leader Dr. René Bohnsack, of the Smart City Innovation Lab at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics.

The platform can also be used by universities. At a breakout session at the 2021 Sustainability Centres Community, Bohnsack and colleague Cláudia Antunes Marante explained how Venturely.io can be used to teach sustainable business models, with features useful for professors and students.
Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics launched its first business model innovation course using Venturely.io in 2019. Since then, the platform has been used to teach business modelling in the BSc, MSc, MBA, and Executive Education courses. Professors have structured courses and assignments around the tool, which allows for simple monitoring, grading, and implementation. The tool can also directly track the development and success of innovative ideas.
Bohnsack and Marante are excited about the applications for the tool, which began strong and continues to grow. Launched in 2016 with the world’s largest business model pattern database, Venturely.io received the Best ICT Tool Award in San Francisco in 2018.
About the SCC Workshop 2021
Every two years, the NBS Sustainability Centres Community Workshop connects leaders of business school sustainability centres for learning and action. This session was a part of the most recent Workshop in July 2021: “Designing the Business School Sustainability Centre of the Future.” See the main Workshop page for an overview and to access additional sessions.
The 2021 Workshop was hosted by the Center for Sustainability Transformation and Responsibility (STaR) at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the Institute for Business Ethics and Sustainable Strategy (IBES) at the FH Wien University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication.

About the Session Leaders
René Bohnsack, Católica-Lisbon School of Business and Economics
René Bohnsack, PhD, is Professor for Strategy and Innovation at Católica-Lisbon and expert in the field of business model innovation, digital transformation and sustainable innovation. René is the academic director of the Lisbon MBA and is leading two labs at Católica-Lisbon which work on advanced business model innovation (Business Model Design Lab) and wellbeing in urban areas via sustainable technologies and digital transformation (Smart City Innovation Lab). He shared the findings of his research in a TEDx talk in 2019. Next to René’s academic accomplishments, he is also an avid entrepreneur and has founded several ventures.
Cláudia Antunes Marante, Católica-Lisbon School of Business and Economics
Cláudia Antunes Marante is a Research Fellow at the Smart City Innovation Lab at Católica Lisbon, she has a Master’s degree in Research on Business and Administration from Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Seville. She has some research experience and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Glasgow. Cláudia is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program focused on Digital Transformation and Business Models. She also has non-academic work experience, being her last position as a Data Analyst at Cisco Systems Portugal.
