The rise of certified Latin American B Corps is noteworthy. Sistema B wants to help southern B Corps achieve scale and impact.
The B Corps of Sistema B
The consequences of irresponsible industry – waste, inequality and pollution – can be harsh realities, but they are not unique to a specific region or location. Decisions made by corporations in one part of the world often have a ripple effect in several others.
Fortunately, the same can be said about proactive, positive business decisions. The rise of certified B Corps in Latin America is evidence of that. South American businesses are legitimizing and leveraging their work by becoming certified as B Corps, or more precisely, Empresas B.
But certification is just one piece of the puzzle.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Maria Emilia Correa, co-founder of Sistema B, the Latin American arm of the B Corp movement, stated: “The goal is not just to have a lot of certified B Corporations; our real goal is to help these companies become significant enterprises that can achieve social scale and impact.”
This vision includes the creation of a legislative infrastructure, similar to that emerging in the United States, to support Latin American benefit corporations. It also includes accessibility to funding platforms and investors, which is essential to achieving scale and impact.
With Sistema B, South American businesses have gained the service and support of an internationally vetted platform to showcase and develop their social and environmental missions.
“Certification is useful but we’re also focusing on the creation of an ecosystem,” explained Correa.
The following Latin American B Corps are representative of the Sistema B ecosystem that Correa refers to. They represent a growing business sustainability culture that is raising the bar for corporations, large and small, around the globe.
