It’s that time again. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released their latest report.
Wondering what you need to know?
Here are some key takeaways about where we are, where we can reasonably get, and how we can get there.
Where we are:
Emissions have slowed, but not fast enough.
We’re not on track to meet the Paris accord targets to limit warming to 1.5C. Instead, given current levels, “the planet will be on average 2.4-3.5C warmer by the end of the century.”
Where we can get:
All hope is not lost — with action, there is a strong opportunity to reduce warming to at least 2C. And, scientists are showing more optimism towards carbon removal solutions to address additional impacts.
5 Strategies to get there:
1. Rapidly reduce fossil fuel investment, use, and subsidy 2. Remove CO2 from the atmosphere 3. Curb energy demand with incentives for lifestyle change 4. Understand the costs of inaction 5. Demand role model behaviour from leaders and wealthy.
