NBS Staff discuss their interests, their goals, and what drove them to pursue business sustainability.

What is your official job description at NBS?

I am the Digital Communities Specialist at NBS. In my role, I support NBS with its digital operations, including the NBS website and newsletters. A large part of my responsibility is publishing content from the NBS team online and ensuring that our digital operations are running smoothly. I also help the NBS team in streamlining internal processes and improving our digital presence.

Why did you decide to work at NBS?

My decision to join NBS was driven by my fascination with the intersection between business and sustainability. Initially, my understanding of the business world and its nuances was limited, but I knew that working at NBS would allow me to learn new things everyday and contribute to its mission. At NBS, I get the utmost privilege of working together with a passionate team to enhance our impact and create positive change.

How did you become interested in the area of business sustainability?

As someone with a deep appreciation and passion for the humanities, I’ve always held a strong belief in advancing initiatives that aim to better our world, particularly in terms of environmental sustainability and social justice. In pursuing a career in communications, my goal has been to actively communicate how we can promote positive change. Recognizing that fostering sustainability within the realm of business offers a concrete and impactful path towards that goal, I discovered a tangible way to merge my interests. Joining NBS has granted me the opportunity to indulge in everything I love – from learning about new fields and devising effective communication strategies, to making a meaningful impact on a daily basis.

What are your interests outside work?

Outside of work, I get to explore my interests in the field of communications and journalism by volunteering for a non-profit news publication and writing articles to inform students about the support resources available at Western University. In my free time, I binge-watch old television shows with my friends and indulge in one of my deepest passions – nail art. You will never catch me out in public without pretty nails.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received actually comes from my favorite television show, Modern Family: “When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. Life will be all like ‘What??'” As ridiculous as it may sound, it inspired me to defy expectations and take unconventional approaches to situations. I’m a strong believer of how life is what you make of it, and I strive to find joy and amusement in life by embracing creativity, thinking outside the box, and approaching challenges with a sense of unpredictability… and a little bit of humour. There is no point is living life the way it’s intended to; instead, being yourself and opposing misguided rules and constructs are what makes for a truly meaningful existence.
