The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership aims to develop a new generation of responsible leaders who will shape local and international business practices and policies in support of social and environmental justice.
- Its strengths lie in its ability to harness the academic integrity of a variety of academic disciplines cutting across areas such as economic and management sciences, environmental sciences, natural sciences, law, engineering and humanities, to name a few.
- Its legitimacy lies in its ability to respond to key issues in the field of corporate responsibility and responsible leadership.
- Its relevance is determined by the extent to which stakeholders, internal (faculty at UP) and external (private sector, public sector and civil society), put a premium on the ALCRL’s ability to advance responsible leadership through relevant teaching and research interventions.
The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL), located in the Department of Business Management, Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria aims to become the pre-eminent centre of excellence in advancing the field of responsible leadership in SA and beyond. The ALCRL is the only centre on the African continent specialising in cutting-edge research in the broad field of leadership in support of a sustainable future. Given unprecedented social, environmental and economic challenges, the need for providing solutions to deal with these challenges has never been so urgent. It is generally agreed that these solutions lie in the hands of the current and especially future generation leaders. The ALCRL therefore questions and critically reflects on the purpose of business and the subsequent role of business and leadership in society.
The ALCRL believes that we need to move towards a more holistic conception of responsible leadership. This expands the wealth-creating function of business to include societal welfare and the health of the planet. It also expands responsibilities of business and its leaders to partner with other companies and other sectors to address matters where business has been part of the problem and is being called upon to be part of the solution. The ALCRL’s research mandate is to deepen evidence-based research in the field of responsible leadership, thereby contributing to the scholarly body of knowledge on the one side, but also contributing to a much needed international debate on leadership in support of the global sustainable development agenda.
