Center for Energy, Development, and the Global Environment
The Center for Energy, Development and the Global Environment (EDGE) at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business is a dynamic hub for education, thought leadership, and industry engagement that enables current and future business leaders to understand and respond effectively to the interrelated global challenges of energy, development, and the environment.
Few forces will have as profound an impact on business in the 21st century as the global dynamics of energy, natural resources, development, and environment. Businesses that understand these emerging trends and their implications for investment, innovation, operations, risk management, and managerial decision-making will have a distinct competitive advantage.
EDGE helps companies and business leaders rise to this challenge. We prepare business decision makers to address questions like: how do we sustainably meet the global demand for energy, resources, and improved quality of life? What are the most promising pathways to transform our current industrial systems to achieve this goal? What role can leading firms play in catalyzing these transformations across their value chains? What partnerships are needed to help facilitate these changes?
Our Center’s primary focus areas include:
- Education: EDGE provides curricular, extracurricular, and experiential learning programming to support an MBA Concentration in Energy & Environment in Fuqua’s daytime, executive, and cross-continent programs and an MBA Concentration in Energy Finance in the daytime MBA program. We also serve as a home for Duke’s three-year joint MBA/Master of Environmental Management degree, one of the preeminent environment and business joint degree programs. Our curriculum includes a year-round speaker series called the EDGE Seminar on Energy & Environment.
- Thought Leadership: We work to contribute to the body of sustainability research among both academics and practitioners, and to highlight cutting-edge Duke academic research the most relevant implications and takeaways for business managers. Besides academic research, we share industry insights through our EDGE Chats video series, Center newsletters, and faculty/staff/student blogging.
- Industry Engagement: We invite companies and executives to actively engage with us by sponsoring experiential learning projects, collaborating on applied research initiatives, speaking and recruiting on campus, participating in executive education, and/or joining our EDGE Advisory Board. We host an annual Sustainable Business & Social Impact Conference (which typically draws over 400 attendees), a Women in Energy series, and two EDGE Advisory Board meetings each year, among other events.
