Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM)
The Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM) was founded in 2000 by Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaltegger. CSM is an institute of the Faculty for Sustainability Science at Leuphana University Lüneburg and among the largest academic institutions fully dedicated to corporate sustainability management. CSM founded the first MBA fully designed and offered for corporate sustainability management (MBA Sustainability Management, sustainament). Leuphana is an innovative university with sustainability and practice-orientation as two strategic core values. It has more than ten years of track record in sustainability, is the first university with an EMAS system and a climate neutrality concept for the whole campus, the first university in Europe with a faculty for Sustainability Science, and among the first with a sustainability report.
We are capacity builders for sustainability management.
With the MBA Sustainability Management CSM educates entrepreneurs and managers as change agents for sustainability, i.e. to realize sustainable development with entrepreneurial means.
We qualify researchers in sustainability management and conduct high quality, conceptual, and empirical research on relevant topics with the aim to create corporate solutions for real world sustainability problems.
The Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM) at Leuphana University Lüneburg is an internationally operating centre for research on sustainability management. CSM conducts research, teaching, and continuous education in the fields of entrepreneurial sustainability management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and social entrepreneurship. With its strong focus on knowledge transfer CSM represents a transdisciplinary, solution-, and application-orientated research organization.
The Centre analyses causes, structures, and processes of environmental, social and sustainability-related problems applying concepts and methods of business management, entrepreneurial, and environmental sciences. It develops solutions for companies, the economy, and society by creating integrative ecological, social, and economic approaches to sustainability management and social entrepreneurship.
How is sustainability performance in and of companies measured and how could the accounting, management control, and reporting systems be improved? How can strategies, business cases, and business models for corporate sustainability be developed? How are stakeholder relationships managed and be improved effectively? How can companies develop new products and services through sustainability-oriented innovation processes? These and further questions are examined by CSM that also deals with practical contemporary topics such as carbon, supply chain management, or biodiversity management.
CSM offers a distance learning MBA in Sustainability Management – the first sustainability MBA worldwide. The Centre is furthermore involved in developing programs and courses on sustainability management and CSR at Leuphana University Lüneburg and other universities.
