NBS Staff discuss their interests, their goals, and what drove them to pursue business sustainability.

What is your official job description at NBS?

At NBS, I have a variety of responsibilities including creating multimedia resources, planning and executing of community events, and increasing engagement and community between NBS’s members.

Why did you decide to work at NBS?

I chose to work at NBS because I see the power that businesses have in today’s economy, and the potential they have for social and environmental good. Our society is at a critical point in time where a lack of urgent consideration for the climate crisis will have detrimental effects. At NBS, I have the opportunity to be a part of creating change.

How did you become interested in the area of business sustainability?’

I have always been interested in sustainability. I think a lot of that is rooted in my elementary Montessori education. There was great emphasis put on exploring the outdoors and learning in natural spaces whenever possible. For a 7th-grade innovation project, I decided to create biodegradable ‘packaging peanuts’ out of wood shavings and apple-cinnamon oatmeal I found in my pantry! Ever since, I have taken a strong interest in sustainability and through my education realized how critical it is to be a part of change, now.

What are your interests outside work?

I am a coach for youth competitive cheerleaders. I love teaching resilience and independence, and seeing children fall in love with the sport that I grew up in. Other than that, I love exercising in nature, trying new recipes, and hanging out with my rescue dog, Dot.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Though potentially clichéd, I think the best piece of advice I have received is to ‘be myself, because everyone else is taken’. I believe that having unique thoughts and experiences is a gift and something to be proud of. At times, I deliberately choose not to fit the mold that society tends to place on individuals.
